It's going to be an exciting week in first grade!
This week...
In Math we are working on collecting data and creating graphs. This
week we will be creating picture and bar graphs. We will also continue to work with tally charts. In Language Arts we
are starting our Phonics unit. This weeks focus is the L Blends. We are
also still working on our Read to Self Stamina during Daily 5. The
children have made it 10 minutes of reading quietly and staying in one
spot. Our goal for the end of this week is to be at 15 or possibly 20! We will also start our Read to Someone Stamina towards the end of the week. Again
the students need to be able to read to someone for 20 minutes, quietly
and in one spot. During Writing we will be learning about our
expectations during writing, working on writing for 20 minutes (work on
writing stamina), and practicing telling a story through words and
pictures. In Science we are beginning our unit on Weather. This week we will specifically focus on the four seasons and how the weather differs during each one.
Homework is coming home Monday. You will find the Spelling Words at the top of the homework along with the number of questions your child needs to complete. It is due every Friday. If you have any questions regarding the homework please don't hesitate to contact me. Spelling words will also be located on the left side of this blog each week. Remember that students' spelling menu, math work page, and reading log will all be glued into your child's spiral homework notebook.
We will visit the Media Center on Wednesday so please make sure your child returns their book so that they can check out another one. As of now students can only check out one book at a time but soon they will be able to pick two. Very exciting!
